In light of the developments at the recent workshop at UMBC, we’ve consolidated our original granular-level metadata files into more comprehensive product-level files. These XML files are SPASE 1.3.0 compliant (at the moment). We will continue to keep track of the ongoing development of the SPASE 1.3.0 schema and make changes to our XML files as needed. These new files can be found at http://ulysses.ftecs.com/data/VEPO-XMLs/Ulysses/RAT/.

With the new magnetic field data now available, I’ve reprocessed the HISCALE MFSA data so that pitch angles are now included with the flux data. The new data, including daily and hourly averaged, are available at http://ulysses.ftecs.com/data/ulysses_hiscale/. There are also new PHA data through the end of 2007 available as well. If you have any comments, concerns, or suggestions regarding the MFSA or PHA datasets, please let me know at patterson@ftecs.com.

A revised version of the XML metadata files for the Ulysses/HISCALE daily-averaged rate data are now available for review at http://ulysses.ftecs.com/data/VEPO-XMLs/Ulysses/RAT/Daily/. These files are SPASE v1.3.0 compliant according to the SPASE XML Validate Tool. If I understand the nomenclature correctly, these metadata files are descriptors at the granular level rather than at the product level.
UPDATE:
The hourly and 5-minute averaged metadata files are ready for review as well. All of these xml files can be found at http://ulysses.ftecs.com/data/VEPO-XMLs/Ulysses/RAT/

Fundamental Technologies has a repository of IMP-8 CPME data spanning the entire 33-year long mission. While these data are publicly available through our website, we’ve taken an additional step forward in making these data reachable by the scientific community. The Virtual Energetic Particle Observatory, VEPO, will in time incorporate SPASE-based metadata files for the IMP-8 CPME data we have. A first draft of these metadata files can be found here. We welcome any and all feedback regarding these metadata files.

The MFSA data from HISCALE for 2006 are ready. You can get the flat csv files from http://ulysses.ftecs.com/data/ulysses_hiscale/. The files will be uploaded to the main FunTech Data Archive soon. The color spectrographs for 2006 are available as well. You can download the smaller .png files for browsing, or the full resolution postscript files. http://ulysses.ftecs.com/images/hiscale/

The EDRGEN and MAGMERGE routines have been fixed, and the production software here at FunTech is back up and running. I owe many thanks to Dennis Haggerty for his help with getting the new source code, and to Syau-Yun Hsieh for writing the new code. If anyone notices any irregularities in the data we ship out, please let me know.

This facility is for HISCALE and EPAM team members and data users. Please use it! There’s a major drift in the timing of the already released and posted EPAM data. Does anyone care?

The VMS-based machines EPAM, LECP, and SPA1 here at FunTech are nearing their final days. All three of these machines are more than a decade old, and Hewlett Packard is no longer offering to renew licenses for the old versions of OpenVMS. We’ve negotiated a temporary license with Hewlett Packard to keep the VMS cluster alive for now, but we must hurry to port over all of the data production software for Voyager/LECP, Ulysses/HISCALE, and ACE/EPAM. We will soon have a new AMD64 to replace the old EPAM machine, and I’ll be working on the recoding of the ARCGEN family of fortran routines and DCL scripts. If anyone has some insight into the inner workings of ARCGEN or know of any special fixes or work-arounds that have been included over the past decades, please let me know via email at patterson@ulysses.ftecs.com.

The summary plots of the EPAM MFSA data from launch to the end of 2005 are available on the EPAM Data Archive. These files have similar nomenclature and format as the HISCALE plots described in the HISCALE Summary Plots post. As with the HISCALE files, these plots are gzipped postscript files. These files can be sent directly to a postscript printer, or viewed onscreen using GhostView in the Seascape orientation with US Letter set as the media. GhostView will handle gzipped files, there’s no need to extract the postscript file first.

Before using these or any other EPAM data, be aware that there is currently an unresolved issue regarding a 1 min/yr timing drift. The latest news on this and other EPAM issues can be found at the EPAM Instrument Homepage at APL. The details of this drift are given in this memo from APL.

A collection of summary plots for the Ulysses/HISCALE MFSA fluxes are now available for download from the Ulysses/HISCALE Data Archive. The ulysses_spectra_* files are color spectrograms for the hourly averaged HISCALE MFSA fluxes. These fluxes have been background corrected and calculated in a reference frame that is co-moving with the solar wind. The file naming scheme is as follows:
ulysses_spectra_yyyy_(detector)_(species)_1h.ps.gz
where yyyy is the four digit year. The four detectors are labeled as m=LEMS30, fp=LEFS60, mp=LEMS120, and f=LEFS150. For the species p=protons, a=Z>1 (mainly alphas), e=electrons. As an example, the proton flux seen by LEMS30 during 2003 is show by ulysses_spectra_2003_m_p_1h.ps.gz.
These are encapsulated postscript files. They are designed to print cleanly, but if you’re viewing them on-screen with a ghostscript/ghostview driven viewer, you’ll need to set the orientation to ’seascape’ and the paper size to ‘letter’. If you have any questions or concerns regarding these plots or any of the MFSA data, please contact me at patterson@ulysses.ftecs.com.
